Dearest Black and Red Pen Holders,
Season 3 has barely lifted off, and we are rising quickly. As our governance framework approaches a working draft, we’ve been able to begin testing and implementing some of the included processes. This led to a smooth election and fluid transition for the role of Talent Scout, and an easy ratification process for Secretary and Guild Coordinator. Furthermore, as we progress to a more equitable and decentralized organization, problems of access vs. quality are rising, bringing us to better understand what it means to actively take part in governance. Samantha, EPA Coordinator, speaks to this in her update below. Despite these challenges, we are all here, showing up for the challenge, and continuing to take the Guild to greater heights.
Welcome to The Scribe’s Quill.

NEW Meetings:
Writers Workshop: Wednesday, 10am PDT. This brings all the goodness of the various workshops we’ve held across the guild into one place.
Editors Workshop/EPA Coordinator Office Hours: Thursday, 1pm PDT (right before EPA). This will start as a conversation around what Editing Workshops should look like, then form into an open space for editors to bring the pieces they’re working on and talk through them in an un-agenda’d format. Time subject to change based on editors’ availability and timezones.
NEW Channels:
We’re done renting in the Writers Guild and are finally owning our own liquidity in our very own channel spin-out. Scroll past the newsletter channels and check out the new EPA channels below.
Other than starting new meetings and migrating to new channels, we’re busy grappling with some of the inherent problems that make DAOs DAOs. Just another day in the office, right? I blame our high ratio of governance-obsessed contributors who’ve found their way into the EPA, who let you all in here? ; )
Namely, we’re addressing how “open” our editing process can be if we want to produce quality content. I’m currently aggregating the comments from our editors and role holders into a proposal to fix our mission-critical issues of openness vs. quality control. I’m aiming to have this done before the meeting next week, so keep an eye out for a forum-post-style Google doc that I’ll need your eyes on. We don’t want to be Reddit, but we don’t want to be The New York Times, either. What are we?
I recommend catching up on the conversations in the #editors and #epa-general channels and looking at my rather artistic charts. I want to hear from you while I draft this proposal, so DM me your thoughts and we can chat async or schedule a voice call.
While I’m working on this I’ll be revisiting some canon, particularly Vitalik Buterin’s 2017 piece The Meaning of Decentralization. I invite you to as well. If we are to build a decentralized publishing house, we must define what decentralization means in the context of publishing stories.
See you Wednesday in the workshop!
From Your Coordination Team
FreedomFighter | Talent Scout
This is my first Scribe’s Quill update as the Talent Scout for the Writers Guild. So firstly, I’d like to thank all of you for giving me this opportunity.
What an exciting time to be a part of this Guild and DAO! There is an ongoing supply of opportunities for you to get involved in, whether it’s writing / editing articles for our EPA, newsletters, or client services. But that’s not all; if you see an opportunity, share it—together we can make it happen.
I spotted an opportunity and shared it with the Guild. Several people got on board and have worked with me since December, bringing this idea to life. Now, we are almost there, about to announce the first contest for DAO Heat. I’d like to give a big shoutout to DAO Heat’s key contributors: @Cheetah, @theconfusedcoin, @AceBeautii, @Chrisfcrypto, @NFThinker—WGMI!
I feel fortunate coming into this role after Sam because she built it up from 0. The hard part has been completed. My task now is to continue the progression. I want to make things as easy as possible for new people to join the Guild and to get started. I’m going to review our use of exams and see if we can simplify things to onboard people, while still maintaining our quality standards.
Even though these areas are at the forefront of my mind, if there are any issues, ideas, or whatever it may be that catches your attention—please let me know! Your thoughts matter to me and to the guild.
I’m looking forward to S3: the members, the opportunities, the evolution of the Guild. Let’s Fly!
FreedomFighter.
State of the Guild
nonsense 🏴 | Coordinator
Week over week, I am ever more excited to see the growth and involvement across the Guild. As we continue to understand what it means to decentralize, and to develop processes that will take us there, participation continues to rise. The capacity for thinking deeply about challenges that arise; the incredible follow-through from our members who are working closely with other projects; the potential for collaboration that is being explored; this all speaks to the leaps and bounds we are making as a Guild. I have stated this ad nauseam already, and will continue to do so, as long as we continue to rise. It is no coincidence that our call to arms, our call to flight, coined by Apollo, is “Let’s Fly, Baby!”
We are flying.
We are flying farther and higher than we ever have before, and based on the high level of participation and commitment, this trend will continue. You willingness to show up and engage with the challenges of governance, coordination, and process speaks to your desire to make the Guild a place where you are at home working: comfortable, productive, and just as important: happy. Your willingness to hone and improve your craft by showing up to workshops and Office Hours speaks to your dedication in raising the level of quality of the content we produce. Your participation shows that you care. And it is this last point, above all, that makes the difference in what we’re building together.
Because you care, you contribute beyond the writing and editing. Because you care, you’re making your voice heard. Because you care, you are helping to make this a home.
Because you care, we are building something beautiful.
The State of the Guild is strong because you care, because you are here, and because you engage.
Let’s Keep. Fucking. Going.
In service to you, the Guild, and the DAO,
nonsense 🏴
